Hi friends,
It's the last Sunday in June, there's a hot stretch in the forecast, and I'm enjoying today's gray and drizzle while it lasts. The garden needed it, and frankly so did I. The weekends have filled up the way they do every summer: swim meets, soccer that somehow runs all year now, and family bike rides that end with somebody needing a snack and somebody else needing a nap. (Take a guess which is which.)
Pretty soon we'll get away and head up to the cabin in Narrowsburg, where we'll go tubing down the Delaware for the first time — as gloriously unproductive as it sounds, and probably the best thing I'll do all week. Send thoughts and prayers.
Make something this week if you've got the time. If you don't, there's tennis on and a porch with your name on it.

Come By — We're Open
The doors are open at the corner of State & Olive in Media — the one with the big teal windows you can't miss. The lights are on, the kettle's on, and there's a 14-foot pink table waiting for you to sit down at it. Come browse the yarn wall, pet the fabric, sign up for a class, or just take a seat and work on whatever you've got going. That's what the place is for.
Summer camp is in full swing, too — an absurd number of small projects already finished, and the place is loud in the best possible way. Quilt week just wrapped, and the proud makers held their quilts up high. More camp weeks all summer.

A waxed-canvas bag that'll outlive us all
Canvas is the make of the summer around here. Noodlehead's Making Backpack ($11) is built for it — or start smaller with their free Open Wide Zippered Pouch. Cut it from our sturdy 10oz duck canvas or a printed Echino canvas. Want that rugged, water-shedding patina? You can wax plain duck yourself — ask us and we'll walk you through it. |

A summer tee, sewn not knit
Sewing with knits is less scary than it looks, and Closet Core's free Core T-Shirt is a perfect first one. Run it up in our soft Bamboo/Cotton jersey (from $2.63 a quarter yard) with matching ribbing for the neckband. A ballpoint needle and a little patience is all the extra gear you need. |

Trending in the Maker World
Crochet is having another moment, and this time it's mesh: market bags, string totes, little net produce sacks — anything you can fill with summer vegetables and feel virtuous about. Granny squares haven't gone anywhere either.
Reach for cotton: Tynn Line for the fine, drapey stuff, or Sandnes Garn Duo for anything that needs to hold a shape. Both are in.

Chelsea Martin's Saugerties Pullover
We are unreasonably excited about this one. The Saugerties Pullover is a steeked colorwork sweater — DK weight, XS through 5XL, $8 on Ravelry — with charts for sheep, bears, and fish, plus a guide to draw your own. And yes, "steeked" means you knit it in the round and then cut your knitting open with scissors, on purpose. It's a rite of passage. We'll talk you off the ledge.
Steeking wants non-superwash 100% wool at DK gauge so the cut edges felt and hold. The designer used Kelbourne Woolens Scout. Our closest in-stock match is Sandnes Garn Double Sunday — 100% non-superwash merino at DK — which will hold a steek. The honest caveat: merino is softer and slicker than a sturdier wool like Scout, so the cut edge grips a little less. If you want maximum hold for your first cut, come in and ask. (Skip the superwash — Smart DK, 220 — it won't felt, and it will unravel.)

A Few Things Bringing Us Joy
Watching · Wimbledon starts tomorrow, and I intend to be horizontal in front of it for the better part of two weeks. Tennis is the ideal knitting sport — long, quiet, the occasional collective gasp.
Reading · Still working through The Little Bride by Anna Solomon, and it's finally getting good.
Eating · Barbecue, and not much else. If it can go on the grill, it's going on the grill. I have not turned on the oven in days.
Doing a little good · The farmers markets are at their peak — peaches, corn, tomatoes worth the wait. Buy from the person who grew it.

I've had Wiser Than Me on while I work — Julia Louis-Dreyfus interviewing women older and wiser than she is, like Jane Fonda, Carol Burnett, and Isabel Allende. Warm, funny, occasionally moving, and exactly the right speed for a long row of plain stockinette.
